When I think about going to the doctor my first reaction is fear...

My fear is fueled by emotions of frustration and a sense that I am unwelcome.

In 2017 I was introduced to the world of Telemedicine. A way to have a doctor visit without  going to the doctor.  I'll tell you more about this in a moment, but first I'd like to share a little background about me- maybe you can relate...

I’m a creature of comfort and I like convenience. I’m pretty much a homebody, I like to sit on the couch and read or watch tv. When I have to make calls or send emails, I tend to procrastinate.

I’m sure that you can relate to the fact that going to the doctor’s office can be quite stressful. You may agree that the steps involved can be tedious and time consuming.

I find that the steps can be tiresome, but that’s not even my biggest concern. As a “woman of size”, the mere fact of going to a doctor’s office can be nerve wracking.

I’d like to share with you some of my stressful moments/experiences i’ve had when going to see a doctor.

For most people, waiting in a doctor’s office seems easy enough to do, but not in my case. When I walk into a waiting room, I immediately get the sense of being stared at because of my weight/size. Just looking at the other patients in the waiting room  I can almost read their minds; they’re hoping I won’t sit next to them because I might “spill” into their seats. It’s incredibly humiliating and embarrassing.

When I would spot an empty chair, i’d hope/pray that it would be wide enough to accommodate me. If the chair seemed too narrow. I would wait standing.

Another great concern of mine is having to be near sick people in the waiting room, especially if they’re coughing and sneezing. It makes me very anxious.
The worst part for me is that there have been countless times when doctors have judged and “fat shamed me” because of my weight. They’d also give me unsolicited dieting advice as if my reason for the doctor visit was somehow due to being overweight, while marginalizing the actual medical symptoms... the actual reason for my doctor visit in the first place.

Just getting to the doctors office or urgent-care clinic is not always that easy, or convenient. We have become creatures of comfort by utilizing technology through using our smart phones, tablets and computers. We enjoy things that are ( a click or two away) readily accessible by using our fingers.

I’ve found an incredible solution to my going to the doctor's office dilemma! Let me give you an example...

I love going to the park.  In the park, I am in my comfort zone. I’m enjoying the atmosphere, getting exercise with my dog, and not feeling any stress at all.

It’s a place where I can do things that I normally procrastinate, like seeing a doctor.

Sitting on a park bench I can speak with a doctor by phone, or have a face-to-face secure video session with a Body Positive Connect doctor using my cell phone, tablet or my laptop. I don’t have to worry about waiting rooms, uncomfortable chairs, patients staring or doctors judging me. I can have a private conversation with a doctor in an enjoyable environment.  The Healthcare Performance Management Institute has found that 70% of doctor’s visits and 40% of ER visits could be handled with a telemedicine visit. The report further indicates that when telemedicine consults are utilized without a physical office visit there is a reduction in healthcare costs.

So... not only will I get a diagnosis, but a prescription if necessary!  The best part is that the medication (no opioids or controlled substances) can be delivered to my home by my local pharmacy. That’s true convenience! It doesn’t get any easier than that.

There is so much stress in the world and finding a little corner where you can make your “zen” place is so important. You can take care of  the things you generally put off (like doctor visits) in a place where you feel comfortable.  For me, it’s the park...  I can do the things I don’t really want to do, but need to do...  in a place where I like to be.

I was so taken by the ease and effectiveness of having a doctor visit without going to the doctor's office using Telemedicine I became a Brand Ambassador for Body Positive Connect, a Telemedicine service that's Personal, Private and Convenient.
